Soft Start For A Water Plant

The water/wastewater market can sometimes be a tough market to get into. Manufacturers build specific products that are built solely around this market to help remain competitive against other markets such as industrial/HVAC. One challenge is that manufacturers only have a few select distributors that have access to their water/wastewater products. Sometimes a customer may have an existing water/ wastewater product or wants a brand that Horner does not have direct access to. Unfortunately, this limits our ability to react quickly, quote competitively, and support the customer the way they deserve. This is why Horner continues to build relationships with other [...]

Hotel Cooling Tower Failure

On one of our 90 degree plus summer days, Horner received a call from a major Hotel near the Indianapolis Airport. The variable frequency drive (VFD) that operates their cooling tower was faulting and preventing the cooling tower from operating. For those who may not know what a cooling tower is, it is used to cool water that is then used to cool the air in the building, and/or cool equipment. So when it is hot, it is a very important piece of equipment. Jeff Meshishnek was sent out to look at the VFD. Jeff identified that the VFD was terminal [...]

Corn Syrup Plant 300HP Drives Project

Where does High Fructose Corn Syrup come from? Horner has a customer that processes corn to make HFCS. This customer processes 230,000 bushels of corn every day that is used in almost every soft drink you purchase. If you look at a label and it has HFCS on that label, it could have been processed at this plant. HFCS does not have to be a liquid product. It is also processed as a dry product. The dry form of HFCS is super sweet, 2-3 times as sweet as liquid, and is processed by running it through a centrifuge made by a [...]

Hospital Kitchen Exhaust Fan

A hospital in Indianapolis needed to replace a very old kitchen exhaust fan and ductwork. This was a joint effort between Horner Fan and Fab and Horner Field Service led by Sales Jeff Wilson. Horner Field Service did the bulk of the work while Horner Fan and Fab reconfigured a Greenheck direct drive fan and new ductwork and louver. The controls were changed from a simple on/off to a VFD that was tied into the building management system as well as reprogramming of the VFD to achieve the desired CFM of air flow. Thanks to everyone who worked over a weekend!

University Flood and VFD Protection

Recently, a larger University in Indiana suffered a flood in the Main Campus Library. During a large rain event, they had (2) 75hp motors with grounding rings exposed to water in the small basement mechanical room. Upon checking stock, delivery of new motors equipped with an internal grounding brush would be 5 to 6 weeks. As the motors are being operated by VFD’s, the customer wanted some form of protection against common mode current which could lead to bearing fluting and motor failure. Horner Salesperson Joseph Motz took the opportunity to present the Cool Blue and NaLA inductive absorbers to the [...]

Horner Certified as ABB Value Provider

Horner Industrial locations in Indianapolis and Springfield were recently certified as ABB Authorized Value Providers. The authorization program is a procedure to guarantee that the services the customer receives from ABB Value Providers are on the same leading level and quality of the ABB products both globally and locally. This prestigious award is only given to select ABB service providers in North America. There are less than 10 authorized ABB Value Providers in the nation right now. The program requires a vetting process that includes interviews with management and shop personnel, as well as a very detailed, in-depth, facilities audit which [...]

Cement Season at Horner

It’s cement outage season in Indiana with Horner doing work in Greencastle, Louisville, Logansport, Speed, and Mitchell IN. A Central Indiana cement plant is conducting their largest Maintenance and Repair outage in 20 years. They needed to replace an entire section of both the kiln and raw mill. The company brought in a 700-ton mobile crane to the plant site requiring 78 semi loads of support to set up. The time needed for these extended kiln and mill repairs allowed the customer to do all other outage work in the same 6-week timeframe. Washington Street, Terre Haute and HMS are all [...]

Toshiba Drive Assembly

We are in the process of working on a project at a major University. What’s interesting is what they’re going to be using the equipment for once we’re completed. The Toshiba Medium Voltage Drive assembly has been put in place. It is 27 feet long and 8 feet tall. The unit is fed with 13,999 V power that reduced to 4160V through a built-in transformer that powers power to the 4160V VFD section of the unit. Horner Field Service Techs Rick Collins and Gary Anderson were able to set and connect the equipment on site with the [...]

Oil Filter Manufacturer Press Upgrade Project

Most of us are old enough to remember the oil filter commercial tag line, “pay us now or pay us later.” Well, those oil filters are made in a facility in Greenville OH and are stamped out on several large stamping presses. These presses were designed with eddy current clutch and motors to drive the press flywheels to enable variable speed operation. Over the last 30 years, the clutch drives have required high maintenance and were undependable. Now on to the solution; Mark Russell (outside sales) had several meetings with engineering staff with assistance from Dave Whited (product sales), Kim Shellabarger [...]

Dough Mixers

We don't just fix large equipment. An opportunity recently came to Horner Louisville from a company who leases out Pizza dough mixing machines to Pizza stores along with other Restaurant equipment. As you can well imagine, these machines are treated like Rental Cars as nobody considers them their property and they’re not maintained very well. Horner Louisville secured the business after a competitor in Louisville took advantage of the situation and had increased their price to stratospheric levels. The units originally came in to Horner Louisville to have us check out and repair the motors which resulted in either a recondition [...]
