Plant Outage Inspection Identifies Big Problem

Horner Indy Field Service was on site at a plant outage in Blytheville Arkansas. This customer is a compressed gases company that supports a steel plant. During the inspection and testing, we identified an insulation problem in a 6,000 HP compressor motor. When we reported the findings to the customer, he asked us to change the motor out for the spare. The spare was in storage in Texas, and they got the spare on the road to Arkansas. Meanwhile, we did not go there with the tools, equipment and the required manpower to do a motor swap of this size. We [...]

When Buying New Is Too Much – Repair

Horner recently achieved a remarkable success story with a major steel mill. They make specialty metals for the aircraft and aerospace industries including rolled steel, bars, ingots, and wire. Initially poised to purchase two new fan units for their exhaust system in their Finish/Sizing Mill, they hesitated due to concerns over pricing and lead time. Sensing an opportunity for collaboration, I proposed the idea of reconditioning the units instead. Working closely with Horner Fan & Fabrication, we meticulously crafted a competitive quote, addressing the client’s concerns head-on. Despite initial reservations, we assured them of a swift turnaround time of 3 to [...]

Terre Haute Industrial Equipment Repair Working The Weekend

Terre Haute has been busy with a lot of work from great customers. Recently a plastics recycling customer called about high vibration on a dryer auger. This customer recycles the plastic processing it into industrial resins that are used to make plastic bags. The stainless-steel auger is used to convey plastic pellets during the washing process, prior to drying and packaging. Due to high vibration the auger was pulled and sent to the Terre Haute shop for repair. Jeremy Brown, machinist, dynamically balanced the auger and sent it back the recycling facility to be put back into production. Another project that [...]

Steel Rolling Tandem Mill Motor

A steel manufacturer sent in a steel rolling tandem mill motor after the armature equalizer insulation had failed to ground due to age and time of service. The bearings, bearing journals, and bearing housings were severely damaged. A team of different Horner Divisions came together to complete this project. Machining Services did an extensive amount of machine work on the shaft and bearing housing. They also turned and undercut the armature when the rewind was completed. Fan and Fabrication manufactured new bearing seal inserts. Horner Coatings sprayed and machined the shaft and bearing housings. They also did the welding of the [...]

Advanced Diagnostic Services and Preventative Maintenance

A major steel mill was looking to upgrade their maintenance practices thru predictive maintenance vibration analysis. There were several meetings with Brad Barton of Horner’s Electrical Mechanical Diagnostics Service (EMDS) group to identify equipment and understand their expectations. The EMDS reporting was covered in depth, a vibration collection route was laid out and frequency of reporting established. The machines identified ranged from 10,000 hp AC motors to smaller AC and DC motors in the range of 100hp up to 1250 hp as well as gearboxes. Horner’s field service group installed remote accelerometers on equipment deemed not safe for personnel to enter [...]

DC Steel Mill Motors

The Horner Springfield division received a call from a steel mill customer, located in Columbus OH. They had a failure on a tandem pair of 850 HP DC motors on their rolling mill operation. Horner Industrial Springfield division had previously rebuilt their spare DC tandem mill motor set, including rewinding one of the armatures. Springfield field service techs removed the failed motors and installed the stored rebuilt motors, at the customer’s site. We also contracted with our local rigger to remove the 16,000 lb. motors and deliver them to our shop. There are still a lot of DC motors in operation [...]
