Plant Outage Inspection Identifies Big Problem
Horner Indy Field Service was on site at a plant outage in Blytheville Arkansas. This customer is a compressed gases company that supports a steel plant. During the inspection and testing, we identified an insulation problem in a 6,000 HP compressor motor. When we reported the findings to the customer, he asked us to change the motor out for the spare. The spare was in storage in Texas, and they got the spare on the road to Arkansas. Meanwhile, we did not go there with the tools, equipment and the required manpower to do a motor swap of this size. We had to locate equipment that we could borrow from the motor shop, and add manpower to the job to have adequate labor to swap the motor out and still finish the PM/ inspection work we had originally been hired to do. Billy Burge and Darrell Cothron, both helped us with the loan of equipment, Bill Honeycutt took care of getting it there via a courier. Bert Serak loaned us Tyler Zyckel from Louisville, and we had Jake Badger, Matt Brown, Rusty Syrus and Eddie Piper, all from IFS on site.
This crew got the PMs completed on time, and the old motor out, the coupling removed from it and reinstalled on the replacement motor, connected, aligned and test run all within the allotted time for the outage. Thanks to all who helped make this happen. Especially the guys who had to give up a weekend to go to Blytheville to make this motor change out happen.
