Manufacturing Partnership Winding Motor Stators

Typically, the work we receive at the Springfield Division is electromechanical components that our customers use as tools to create their own products with. In the Spring of 2019, we started a partnership to aid one of our local manufacturing facilities in producing and testing the products they make for their customers. This relationship has grown, and we are called upon in times when their orders are greater than their staff can produce. The Springfield and Indianapolis divisions have worked with this customer in the past, primarily winding motor stators. Our customer has recognized the value of having Horner as a [...]

Horner Rescues Motor Manufacturer Hit by Tornado

A motor manufacturer that produces motors for the rail industry. Their facility in Dayton OH was devastated by a tornado on Memorial Day weekend, last year. Since then, the Horner Industrial Springfield Division has been assisting their engineers to get their products tested and prepared for shipment to their customers. Last month, we were asked to start up a program to wind new 100 HP fan stators for the customer. They sent one of their winding engineers to our shop for a week to teach us their winding methods and materials. The engineer was a winding supervisor at the Springfield shop, [...]

1500 HP Aggregate Mill Motor

A large aggregate company in Southern Indiana that Horner Industrial has serviced for years contacted Horner as they had a 1,500 HP 180 rpm Open Frame AC Wound Rotor/Synchronous motor that needed to be removed, rewound, and reinstalled. This motor was manufactured in the 1950’s and it was one heavy piece of iron. (42,000lbs) Once it was removed, transporting it posed a challenge to Horner’s Logistics Department as it had to be transported on a special “low-boy” semi-trailer due to its size. We had to make sure that it would pass under all the overpasses on I-65 from Louisville to Indianapolis. [...]

1000 HP Challenge

We have a saying that “if you are not making mistakes, you are not doing much.” Well, that holds true for our customers, as well. Recently, a customer connected a 1000 HP DC motor improperly and the motor was operated until the field and interpole coils failed. Dan Sneary inspected the motor out on-site and determined the windings had failed. The customer did not have a spare motor so this job turned into a full overtime repair job. Bill Roper handled all of the customer communications so our shop could concentrate on the repair work and meeting a one-week deadline. This [...]

Horner Industrial Group Helps Manufacturer After Dayton Tornado

On Memorial Day, May 27th at 11:30 PM, an F-3 tornado packing winds up to 140 MPH hit several homes and businesses in Dayton Ohio. One of the businesses was a manufacturer of specialty motors for the railroad industry. The storm tore off half of the roof and destroyed the walls, leaving the steel structure intact. (see photos) Two weeks earlier, Dave Whited ran into a previous co-worker that he had not seen in 20 years. Corky Compton was a winder at our Springfield repair shop prior to leaving our shop to be the winding supervisor at the motor manufacturer. Dave [...]
