Steel Mill Exhaust Fan Tests New Loctite Coating

Horner Industrial Coatings recently addressed an issue concerning a steel mill exhaust fan that required coating following modifications to its design. The customer reported encountering challenges related to particle accumulation on the backside of the fan blades due to the structural design of the gussets supporting each blade. In response, our Fan/Fab team redesigned the support structure and conducted all necessary welding tasks prior to coating. Given that the blades were already hard-faced, our standard process of applying a hard coat was deemed unnecessary. Instead, we opted to coat the entire fan with a zinc-based wire, effectively galvanizing it and providing [...]

Exhaust Fans and Dixie Cups

A cup manufacturer in Kentucky needed seven exhaust fans replaced, but needed it to be done and still keep production in operation. To shut down production would be too costly. This type of plant is considered to be a food plant which means the underside of the fan openings had to be tarped to prevent dirt and debris from falling onto the machines below. The day of the job the wind was blowing at 27mph. The plant has a policy that once the wind reaches 30 mph no crane operation could be used. The wind held steady and Horner Fan and [...]

Roof Mounted Exhaust Fans

A Warehouse and Logistics Company was having electrical problems with three roof mounted exhaust fans. Apparently when installed they had been wired incorrectly. Time took its toll and the units eventually stopped working. The electricians who were called in to evaluate the unit, contacted Horner to evaluate the unit from a mechanical perspective. As suspected, the fans had been installed incorrectly as well. Upon inspection by Horner the following issues were found: incorrectly wired motors – causing failure and incorrectly mounted frames – causing belt wear, sheave deterioration and bearing failure. The customer had the units removed from the roof and [...]

Disturbing The Peace: Exhaust Fan Noise

A Printing Company in Crawfordsville, IN contacted Horner Fan and Fab after getting multiple complaints from neighbors about the noise the facility was making. The noise was contributing to an exhaust fan that pulls the shredded paper from the inside of the building and puts the paper into a hopper. When the air came out of the building through the exhaust it sounded like a jet engine. With the plant running 24/7 you can see why there were complaints. Brad Snodgrass went out to the plant and took measurements, looked at the round airducts, looked at the exit ducts, and took [...]

Aluminum Manufacturer Exhaust Fan Build

Horner Fan & Fabrication had been involved with the rebuild and repair of an existing furnace fan earlier in 2018 at an Aluminum Manufacturer. The project was stressful due to time constraints and very expensive for the customer. This experience led Horner Sales to suggest to the customer that they needed a back-up plan in the event they had another fan go off line. This led the customer to approach Horner about building them a fan that could be used for just such occasions. The existing furnace units used at the plant were manufactured in Germany. Although the plant had many [...]
