Steel Rolling Tandem Mill Motor

A steel manufacturer sent in a steel rolling tandem mill motor after the armature equalizer insulation had failed to ground due to age and time of service. The bearings, bearing journals, and bearing housings were severely damaged. A team of different Horner Divisions came together to complete this project. Machining Services did an extensive amount of machine work on the shaft and bearing housing. They also turned and undercut the armature when the rewind was completed. Fan and Fabrication manufactured new bearing seal inserts. Horner Coatings sprayed and machined the shaft and bearing housings. They also did the welding of the [...]

Sawmill DC Motor

Last summer, we received a call from the maintenance manager of a large sawmill. To get an idea of equipment size, this large bandsaw cuts 6’ diameter tree trunks into quarter pieces. A large carriage carries the log and feeds it into a large bandsaw with a blade that is 12” wide. The quarter pieces then go to smaller saws to cut slab boards. The complaint was that the large DC mill motor was making noise. Our field service supervisor, Jim Delawder, investigated and found that the banding on the commutator end of the armature had fractured and was flopping against [...]

Complex Motor Rewind – DC Mill Motor

Horner Louisville had the opportunity over the Holidays to service a customer who is a plastics extrusion company. The motor came in on an overtime basis, so it was given top priority. The customer sent in a 75Hp FUJI DC Motor that, after disassembly, inspection and testing required a full rewind and machine work that included coatings work on the armature. However, this wasn’t your every day run of the mill DC motor. The motor was a random wound compound design which is known to be a little tricky to wind. Louisville’s winder, Charlie Mings, looked at the winding and was [...]

13200 V 2000 HP Vertical Motor

Can you even imagine how many 60,000,000 gallons a day of water looks like? A good-sized bath would hold 40 gallons and a million gallons would be 25,000 baths. A water utility company recently sent in a 13,200V, 2,000 HP Vertical Motor to be rebuilt. Due to Capital Improvement programs the city and the Preventative Maintenance Team said this motor was due for a rebuild. This motor supplies energy for a 60,000,000 gallon a day vertical pump pumping potable water to the city. This facility has been going strong along the Ohio River since 1860. This was a total rewind on [...]

Finish Ball Mill Motor

A 1350 HP Synchronous Motor out of a cement plant in Ohio was called out to bid and Horner won that bid. This finish mill motor comes out of a cement plant in the ball mill. The ball mill is a big round pipe that is full of steel balls the size of a softball. As the pipe turns it has blades welded on the inside which carry the balls up to the top of a 16-foot diameter pipe and the balls fall to the bottom of the pipe where the rocks are. The weight of the balls smash the rock [...]

University Flood and VFD Protection

Recently, a larger University in Indiana suffered a flood in the Main Campus Library. During a large rain event, they had (2) 75hp motors with grounding rings exposed to water in the small basement mechanical room. Upon checking stock, delivery of new motors equipped with an internal grounding brush would be 5 to 6 weeks. As the motors are being operated by VFD’s, the customer wanted some form of protection against common mode current which could lead to bearing fluting and motor failure. Horner Salesperson Joseph Motz took the opportunity to present the Cool Blue and NaLA inductive absorbers to the [...]

Horner Certified as ABB Value Provider

Horner Industrial locations in Indianapolis and Springfield were recently certified as ABB Authorized Value Providers. The authorization program is a procedure to guarantee that the services the customer receives from ABB Value Providers are on the same leading level and quality of the ABB products both globally and locally. This prestigious award is only given to select ABB service providers in North America. There are less than 10 authorized ABB Value Providers in the nation right now. The program requires a vetting process that includes interviews with management and shop personnel, as well as a very detailed, in-depth, facilities audit which [...]

Oil Filter Manufacturer Press Upgrade Project

Most of us are old enough to remember the oil filter commercial tag line, “pay us now or pay us later.” Well, those oil filters are made in a facility in Greenville OH and are stamped out on several large stamping presses. These presses were designed with eddy current clutch and motors to drive the press flywheels to enable variable speed operation. Over the last 30 years, the clutch drives have required high maintenance and were undependable. Now on to the solution; Mark Russell (outside sales) had several meetings with engineering staff with assistance from Dave Whited (product sales), Kim Shellabarger [...]

Motor Steel Bases at Pumping Station

We were called to a very rural pumping station in Kentucky. We had to remove two motors from there for repair. When those motors were removed, there were some real issues discovered with the steel bases they were mounted on. One was over filled with grout, and actually bedded the motor into the grout. The grout had actually flown up in between the fins on the bottom of the motor. The correction of this may be a future article, but without correction, this motor will never be able to be moved for alignment! The point of this article is to discuss [...]

Horner Rescues Motor Manufacturer Hit by Tornado

A motor manufacturer that produces motors for the rail industry. Their facility in Dayton OH was devastated by a tornado on Memorial Day weekend, last year. Since then, the Horner Industrial Springfield Division has been assisting their engineers to get their products tested and prepared for shipment to their customers. Last month, we were asked to start up a program to wind new 100 HP fan stators for the customer. They sent one of their winding engineers to our shop for a week to teach us their winding methods and materials. The engineer was a winding supervisor at the Springfield shop, [...]
