Cement Plant Finish Mill Project

The electric motor plays a crucial role in the operation of a cement ball mill. It provides the power necessary to rotate the mill’s cylinder, which contains grinding media such as steel balls. This rotation of the cylinder causes the grinding media to cascade and grind the raw materials or clinker inside the mill into fine powder. The motor’s power and efficiency directly impact the performance and productivity of the cement ball mill. A properly sized motor with sufficient power ensures that the mill can handle the required load and maintain the desired rotation speed. Additionally, the motor’s reliability and durability [...]

Projects Happening In Our Shops: Indianapolis

Horner Helps Biofuel Plant Reopen: An ethanol plant that was recently closed decided to reopen. Their plant equipment sat idle for years since 2018. They are in the process of reconditioning all their equipment and Horner has been tasked with a cooling tower that has a total of six motor/pump combos where they need four of them working at all times. These motors are 600HP vertical pump motors. Other projects that Horner is helping the plant with is rebuilding some of the bases that the pumps sit on, 3 stage Gould pumps, and two large dryer fans.     Cement Finish [...]

Slip Ring Rebuild

A customer called overnight because they had a slip ring failure on one of two synchronous motors and that halted production. Horner was on site in the morning to assess the situation and it was determined that an on site repair was not feasible. The unit was disassembled and transported to the Terre Haute shop for rebuild. By securing customer supplied brushes, brushholders (which are now obsolete), Horner stock to fabricate insulators and with the help of Horner Machining Services, we were able to have the unit back on site within just a few days. Horner was onsite for the eight [...]

Finish Ball Mill Motor

A 1350 HP Synchronous Motor out of a cement plant in Ohio was called out to bid and Horner won that bid. This finish mill motor comes out of a cement plant in the ball mill. The ball mill is a big round pipe that is full of steel balls the size of a softball. As the pipe turns it has blades welded on the inside which carry the balls up to the top of a 16-foot diameter pipe and the balls fall to the bottom of the pipe where the rocks are. The weight of the balls smash the rock [...]

1500 HP Aggregate Mill Motor

A large aggregate company in Southern Indiana that Horner Industrial has serviced for years contacted Horner as they had a 1,500 HP 180 rpm Open Frame AC Wound Rotor/Synchronous motor that needed to be removed, rewound, and reinstalled. This motor was manufactured in the 1950’s and it was one heavy piece of iron. (42,000lbs) Once it was removed, transporting it posed a challenge to Horner’s Logistics Department as it had to be transported on a special “low-boy” semi-trailer due to its size. We had to make sure that it would pass under all the overpasses on I-65 from Louisville to Indianapolis. [...]
