Horner Helps Biofuel Plant Reopen: An ethanol plant that was recently closed decided to reopen. Their plant equipment sat idle for years since 2018. They are in the process of reconditioning all their equipment and Horner has been tasked with a cooling tower that has a total of six motor/pump combos where they need four of them working at all times. These motors are 600HP vertical pump motors. 500 MW Generator Failure: Lesson Be Observant

          A 500 MW generator failed catastrophically, it had an internal short that resulted in a phase to phase short. The generator stopped so suddenly that it sheared off 24 2 ½” bolts in the coupling between the generator and the turbine. The problem was traced to the phase leads resonance shifting to 120HZ as the generator aged. Power Generation Plant Water Pump Motors

A coal fired power generation plant had a planned outage to maintain equipment and Horner was onsite to remove 2 1250HP vertical pump motors. These motors pull water from the reservoir for cooling purposes and heat exchangers. These motors were taken out for routine maintenance, basic reconditioning and to replace bearings. Onsite to help with the removal was Indianapolis Field Service Don Pence, Louisville Field Service Joe Dupont and Terre Haute’s Eddie Piper and Jeremy Brown. 60 HP Integral Vertical Pump Motor (Water Cooled) Assembly

A Louisville customer recently brought in a 60 hp integral vertical motor pump assembly where the motor was water-cooled. The circulation tubes running through the stator had clogged with lime buildup causing the motor to overheat which resulted in the motor windings being burned to a crisp. The customer came in to witness the teardown and to discuss options to prevent future unplanned downtime, as this had happened numerous times before.
