Locker Manufacturer Fan Failure

A locker manufacturer in Illinois builds lockers like you would see in schools and employee work areas. They called Horner because they had a fan failure and it caused enough damage to need to be replaced. This fan is part of an oven application that dries the painted locker panels. The fan failed due to fatigue and the fan blades came off and destroyed the fan cone. When this fan was originally built it was installed without consideration of it ever being replaced or repaired. A double wall had to be cut and removed to allow the job to be accomplished. [...]

Hardwood Manufacturer 50″ Fan

A hardwood flooring manufacturer contacted Horner about repairing a 50” Fan. With help from Indianapolis Field Service, Horner Fan and Fabrication had a 3 day window to repair this 50” fan wheel. This was the main dust collection fan for the plant. The structure around this fan made it very challenging to remove. The fan is inside the plant with structural steel above the fan and a concrete wall on two sides. After removing the insulation and the inlet fitting there was about 36” of space to maneuver this heavy wheel and 2-15/16” shaft out of the building. Once in the [...]

Rooftop Exhaust Fan Safety Project

A customer who makes counter weights for fork trucks called Horner after a safety incident. One of their old exhaust fans has a failure and a blade from the prop fell to the manufacturing floor. The customer knew they not only had to replace the roof- top fans but needed to rethink the design for safety of the workers. So instead of 1 fan being repaired they decided all 4 rooftop exhaust fans would be redesigned. Fan and Fabrication came up with an aluminum safety screen that would be welded on the underside of the fans. This new custom safety screen [...]

Powerplant Turbine Vent Fan/Motor

A power plant’s combined cycle generating station contacted Horner Salesperson Joseph Motz on Friday 12/16/22 regarding one of the Turbine Vent fan motors which had failed and was going to need to be replaced or repaired. As this motor is not accessible while the Turbine generator is running, Horner could not verify Motor dimensions for the possible replacement of the original OEM motor. The Station had a spare fan, but it did not come with a motor. Upon inspection of the fan and Impeller in the customers storeroom, it was noted that the base could accommodate the metric frame motor but [...]

Vibration Issue on Forced Draft Fan

A 100 year old steam plant was having a long standing vibration issue that they could not correct. Our EMDS department determined the likely issue was the hub to shaft fit. Horner Machining Services did most of the work on this fan including: • Remove old bearing, couplings, and louvers • Press old shaft out of the fan • Sand blast the fan and louvers clean • steam clean coupling • set up new shaft and check for straightness, then install • Dynamic Balance • Paint and reinstall the original coupling Field Service did the on-site work for removal, installation, and [...]

Cement Fan Repair

The Springfield Division received a call from a Cement Company just before the Memorial Day weekend, for help with a large 8’ diameter propeller style fan that self-destructed. The fan lost one blade and bent over 6” of the rest of the blade tips. Mark Russell and Kim Shellabarger had a meeting with the plant manager on Friday and learned that the request was for a “patch job” with no warranty, just to get them up and running until they could acquire and install a new fan. We were also informed of the high production loss per day, while this fan [...]
