Metal Fabrication Safety Platform Solutions

A food ingredient manufacturer in Urbana, Ohio had a difficult time maintaining their dust collection and fire suppression systems due to the systems being located in an awkward spot. In order to service these systems, maintenance workers at the company were required to harness themselves and to straddle two I-beams approximately 30” apart roughly 30 feet above ground level. The company contacted Brad Snodgrass at Horner Fan and explained their predicament. Brad made the trip to Ohio to inspect the situation and offer suggestions. The customer advised him that whatever was presented would need to be bolted into place because welding [...]

History of Horner Fan and Fabrication

Indiana Fan & Fabrication operates as a division of Homer. It was founded in 1895 and has been an Indianapolis operation ever since. Thomas Bemis moved to Indianapolis in 1890 and worked several years for a pattern and model maker. The company he worked for manufactured special machinery parts, provided drafting and engineering services, and made patterns for various castings. The firm also acted as “inventors’ assistants,” manufacturing practical models of new inventions and supplying working drawings and blueprints. Bemis seems to have marketed the Triumph Exhaust Fan, which was used in laundries, engine and boiler rooms, theaters, and packinghouses. One [...]

Pallet Fabrication Project: Before and After

Before After Before After A pallet fabrication company called for help with their operation in Franklin IN. They process dimensional hardwood into heat treated pallets for domestic and international use. They had recently added some automation equipment and additional saws to their production operation. Their old dust collection system would plug and they could only run half of their equipment at a time. Not to mention several hours a day were spent cleaning sawdust off of the floor. The other issue was the PVC pipe they had used can cause a static electric [...]

From Scrap To Like New

A brick manufacturer had a large fan that pulls air, brick and cement dust thru an overhead duct system into a bag house then through the fan and up a stack. The baghouse requires cleaning frequently and during the cleaning cycle the baghouse is bypassed and the material goes through the fan. This causes buildup on the fan blades and thus an imbalance and vibration. The vibration is so severe it cracks the motor base, bearing base and fan housing. The customer has attempted to deal with this by filling the fan base with concrete, welding large angle iron to the [...]

Disturbing The Peace: Exhaust Fan Noise

A Printing Company in Crawfordsville, IN contacted Horner Fan and Fab after getting multiple complaints from neighbors about the noise the facility was making. The noise was contributing to an exhaust fan that pulls the shredded paper from the inside of the building and puts the paper into a hopper. When the air came out of the building through the exhaust it sounded like a jet engine. With the plant running 24/7 you can see why there were complaints. Brad Snodgrass went out to the plant and took measurements, looked at the round airducts, looked at the exit ducts, and took [...]

Dredge Motors

A gravel pit in Petersburg, KY contacted John Baumann (Sales) with a problem. They had 2 motors on a dredge. A particular dredge is a floating clam shell type bucket that pulls gravel off the bottom of a lake. The motors drop and pull up the bucket from the bottom of the lake. The team at the gravel pit wanted to upgrade from a wound rotor motor and convert it to a new induction motor to be controlled by a VFD. They also wanted to upgrade the controls to eliminate a diesel generator and go to shore power. If they run [...]
