Oil Filter Manufacturer Press Upgrade Project

Most of us are old enough to remember the oil filter commercial tag line, “pay us now or pay us later.” Well, those oil filters are made in a facility in Greenville OH and are stamped out on several large stamping presses. These presses were designed with eddy current clutch and motors to drive the press flywheels to enable variable speed operation. Over the last 30 years, the clutch drives have required high maintenance and were undependable. Now on to the solution; Mark Russell (outside sales) had several meetings with engineering staff with assistance from Dave Whited (product sales), Kim Shellabarger [...]

Motor Steel Bases at Pumping Station

We were called to a very rural pumping station in Kentucky. We had to remove two motors from there for repair. When those motors were removed, there were some real issues discovered with the steel bases they were mounted on. One was over filled with grout, and actually bedded the motor into the grout. The grout had actually flown up in between the fins on the bottom of the motor. The correction of this may be a future article, but without correction, this motor will never be able to be moved for alignment! The point of this article is to discuss [...]

Pallet/Mulch Manufacturer Rescue

A Saturday at midnight Horner rep Dennis Cardwell received a call from a local pallet/mulch maker saying that their 750 HP motor had broken the shaft. Dennis set into motion after hours to see if a motor could be located only to find the motor was a special OEM build and we could not quote the motor. Not being satisfied with this Dennis contacted Craig Hallett (Inside Sales Manager) for a meeting to see if we could find a motor that would come close and perhaps do some modifications. As it turns out we located a stock 800HP TECO-Westinghouse motor with [...]

Pipeline Motor Base and Loctite Coatings

A Pipeline Company had a project that was going late into October due to a 1250HP 4160V motor upgrade to a more modern frame. Once the original large existing GE 2300V motor was removed from the sled base, the surface was checked for flatness and it was found to be out close to .125”. This obviously was not acceptable for a 2 pole motor that was direct coupled to a Sulzer propane pump. Matt Phelps of Horner Fan&Fab had quoted a transition base for the newer 4160V more modern frame to meet the D dim. (shaft height). The general practice for [...]

Loose Motor Bases: Motor Vibration (A Simple Solution)

When analyzing motors, it is easy to read more into a problem than actually exists. This case history illustrates the need to always look for the simple solution first. While at a power plant working on a large fan, the vibration analyst requested that a large mill motor be examined. The motor had been sent out to motor shops twice. In each instance, the vibration remained high when the motor was put back into operation. Attempts were made to field balance the motor, however, they were unsuccessful. The motor continued to have amplitudes of 8 mils of vibration, all of which [...]
