Power Plant Shut Down Work
We all know that shutdown work is critical to all customers, how- ever, when we are working for a powerplant the stakes are even higher. Bert Serak sold a lot of shutdown work for a powerplant located in southeastern Ohio. The first job was a 1000 HP motor that had to be rebuilt and returned in 5 days. This motor looked like a UFO when it was lifted by a crane to the rooftop of the plant. The next opportunity was to rebuild a dozen fans and drive motors in 5 days. We sent two trucks to pickup the fans and motors and the shop worked around the clock with 3 shifts, on these jobs. Our machine shop balanced the fans on arbors and then our field service techs then trim balanced the
fans on our test stand. When these dozen hot jobs were delivered, we picked up a 700 HP spare motor for rebuild and we also have a 3,000 HP spare motor, scheduled for pickup. There is only one way to achieve a successful customer shutdown, of this magnitude – it takes team- work. From the salesman opening the customer’s door, to the estimating and quoting to win the job, to the truck drivers moving the jobs, to the supervision needed to overcome obstacles, to the mechanics dismantling, testing and assembling, to the parts cleaners doing the dirty work, to the machine shop dynamic balancing all rotating parts, to the purchasing agent securing all of the correct parts when we need them, to the field service techs trim balancing fans all night, to the report writer for a final report, to the final office invoicing of the jobs. It takes a team to coordinate and channel all of this effort into positive results for the customer. I am proud to be one of the team members at Horner Industrial Group, Springfield division!
